Who To Contact:

          Share Your Concerns

          With Decision Makers

The recommendation for the 87th Avenue alignment is going before the City of Edmonton Transportation and Public Works Committee on September 9th.  The Committee is chaired by Councillor Bryan Anderson.  The other Committee members are Mayor Mandel, Councillor Kim Krushell, Councillor Ben Henderson and Councillor Ed Gibbons.  This Committee will then be making a recommendation to City Council for a final recommendation.

Ways To Register Your Concerns and Provide Input:

1) It is critical that you express your concerns in writing to City Council in advance of the meeting.   Your letters and phone calls could focus both on concerns regarding the City’s process in putting forward this recommendation and the merits of the recommendation itself.

2) You can also share your views to members of the media, such as through Letters to the Editor

3) You can attend the September 9th meeting of the Transportation Committee.  While all citizens are given the opportunity to speak for 5 minutes at the meeting, we are trying to coordinate a small group of people to each speak to an issue as part of a larger presentation.  We have been counseled several times that while having lots of citizens show up to hear the presentations on September 9th is a good thing, having hundreds of five minute individual presentations is not.

4) If you would like to provide some input to the small group doing the presentation, please contact us at westlrtconcerns@shaw.ca .  You can also go to the YOUR INPUT section of this website and send us your views.

Possible Areas of Comment are:

  • Lack of Consultation and Public Awareness: The City of Edmonton could have done a great deal more to make sure the West LRT proposal was more widely known and discussed.  Many affected residents either still do not know of the recommendation or are only just finding out about it.
  • Short Time Frames for Reaction: Short time frames for affected neighbourhoods to react and respond to the recommendation – the Open Houses were only one month before the scheduled hearing date.
  • Lack of study of impacts on affected neighbourhoods: The City has not answered questions as to how access across 87 Avenue will be impacted nor about traffic flows at the already congested intersections of 87 Avenue and 149 Street, and 87th Avenue and 170th Street.  There is also the question of rezoning and the development of these residential neighborhoods into a high density traffic corridor.
  • Limited Opportunity for Increased Ridership: Under current zoning rules, there is limited opportunity for transit oriented development and higher density development. Without the opportunity for higher density development it is difficult to justify an expenditure of the magnitude of what is proposed.
  • Impact on the River Valley: The recommended alignment goes right through a pristine area of the River Valley. The City has adopted policies all designed to preserve and protect the River Valley.  This recommendation completely ignores those policies.
  • Lack of Study of Alternate Routes: Given that the City is planning to spend nearly $2 billion (in today’s dollars), all potential alignments should be fully studied and considered.
